PORVORIM: Minister for Environment Rajendra Arlekar said that the coal handling at the Mormugao port can be completely shut if the companies involved don’t adhere with the conditions laid by the department.
He said, “We have already given direction to reduce the 25 per cent of the handling following the pollution, if they don’t act on the order we can ask them to reduce it further by 50 per cent and even 100 per cent if companies not bother about pollution”.
Arlekar said that the “department won’t allow to play with the life of people, they don’t have that right.”
The minister said that the pollution at the river Mandovi is being caused due to the release of garbage and sewage in the waters. He said that it should be stopped on priority.
