VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council on Friday inaugurated a new garbage compactor.
Businessman Narayan Bandekar inaugurated the garbage compactor in the presence of MMC Chief Officer Y B Tavde, Vice Chairperson Shekar Khadapkar, former chairperson Fiola Rego and other councillors and MMC staff.
MMC, which is in need of compactors as most of the garbage trucks and the lone garbage compactor are in dilapidated state, got a shot in the arm when Municipal Administrator Elvis Gomes allotted the garbage compactor, which was bought for Cuncolim Municipal Council and was lying unused.
The compactor can compress garbage and can carry up to 80 cubic metres of garbage in compressed form.
Speaking to Herald, Khadapkar said since other vehicles are in dire state, they had requested Gomes to allow the council to purchase a new compactor.
“However, heeding our request, Gomes allotted the garbage compactor which was bought for Cuncolim Municipal Council,” added Khadapkar.
However, Khadapkar has said that garbage is piling up at the garbage site at Headland Sada.
which is incidentally in his ward, failing which he will support his voters who threatened to stop the garbage trucks from dumping garbage at the site.
Bandekar said he had taken up the development of the port town issue with Gomes and Vasco MLA and KTC Chairman Carlos Almeida. “Gomes and Almeida assured me that the port town will see some changes in the next few months,” he added.
