Vasco: Usually a place that is jam packed with customers, the Vasco fish market now has hardly any visitors. According to the vendors it is the lack of ‘big fish’ in adequate quantity. The little fish that is available is procured from neighbouring States or is kept in a storage facility. Even then, the few customers that are visiting the market often head back, due to the high prices of fish or their concerns about it being fresh. One customer said that that you have to get there early as the limited quantity available gets sold early. A restaurant owner on the condition of anonymity said that they get their supply of seasonal big fish from neighbouring States. “That’s why the daily price of fish dishes differ as it depends on the prevailing rates and the availability of fish,” he added.
Fish vendors rued the slowdown in business and pointed out that the margins they make is also low due to the limited quantity of fish available. They however added that business should be back to normal once the fishing season resumes.
