VASCO: In a crucial decision, the fisher women from Vasco have agreed to support the construction of fish market project, proposed by the Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida.
A meeting of the fisher women was convened by Almeida on Friday at the deputy collector’s chamber. The meeting was attended by Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Deepak Naik, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, Mormugao Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunita Sawant, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo and officials from several government departments.
The fisher women agreed to the construction of fish market project, following an assurance given by the Mormugao Municipal Council to stop the unauthorised selling of fish by the vendors within the municipal jurisdiction and also to stop the selling of fish at the kiosks and gaddas are operating along the Khariwada shore.
At the meeting, Almeida issued directions to the MMC chief officer Fernandes and Mormugao Mamlatdar Prabhu to initiate prompt action against the vendors, kiosks and gaddas and stop the illegal selling of fish.
Speaking to reporters, Almeida said that the fish market project was a need of the hour. “There were some issues over the construction of the fish market project, but it has been resolved,” Almeida said. He said that the fisher women from Vasco who basically sell their fish at the fish market in the heart of the town have demanded immediate stop to the unauthorised selling of fish.
“The Mormugao municipal authorities would kick start a drive to stop the illegal sale fish from January 2 onwards in the municipal jurisdiction, ensuing that no sale of fish will be allowed in all the 25 wards,” Almeida said. He opined that MMC chief officer has been assigned the duty to crack down on the unauthorized sale of fish.
The Vasco MLA said that the work of the proposed new fish market project would start by March first week and would be completed within the next one and half year.
On the occasion, MMC Chairperson Naik appreciated the fisher women for their cooperation. He said that the fish market project was halted due to political gimmicks
