Vasco fisherwomen object to ground plus two market complex

VASCO: Vasco’s new fish market plan yet again met stiff opposition with the fisherwomen on Monday objecting to a ground plus two market complex.
The fisherwomen have demanded that they do not want a ground plus 2 market complex and claimed that the Mormugao Municipal Council would shift the fruit and vegetable vendors here and this would affect their business.
The fisherwomen also opposed the plan to handover the site to the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to commence the work.
A fisherwoman Caridade Pereira said, “The Mormugao Municipal Council has to build the market and hand it over to us and we will decide on what to allow in the fish market and what not to.”
The fishermen demanded that they be shifted to the footpath opposite to the present market until the new market is ready.
Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Kritesh Naik Gaonkar and Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had to face the stiff opposition from fisherwomen.
However, the chairperson said the Mormugao Municipal Council may shift the market vendors to the Dev Damodar Trust land by making it a vending zone till the market is ready.
Former minister Jose Philip D’Souza demanded that the fishermen’s demands be fulfilled.
It may be recalled that the High Court had passed an order unequivocally opposing the use of pavements for commerce.
Kritesh said they would seek court permission to shift the vendors on the footpaths.
