VASCO: Concerned about unregulated job recruitment agencies in the State, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida has decided to raise the issue in the forthcoming assembly.
Besides seeking details of job recruitment agents registered with the government, Almeida told Herald that he will also ask the government to take action on those found duping youth by promising them lucrative jobs abroad.
Speaking to Herald a day after five agents were detained on charges of duping at least 70 youth of an estimated Rs 70 lakh after assuring jobs in Malaysia, Almeida assured that he would take up the issue during the forthcoming assembly session.
“I will urge the government to compile statistics of all the registered job recruiting agents and to penalise those involved in the recruiting business without proper registration and authorisation,” added Almeida.
Almeida claimed that despite an NRI Commission advertisement in the print and electronic media requesting people not to fall prey to unauthorised recruiting agents, people have failed to pay heed to these warnings and cry when duped.
“I will request the NRI Cell to conduct awareness camps at all religious places, panchayat level and other organisations to educate people not to fall prey to these unregistered agents,” said Almeida.
Almeida advised job seekers to verify the credentials of job recruiting agents by contacting the Economic Cell operating at the police station before paying money.
Advising youth to self-employ in the State, Almeida informed that there are various government schemes for youth and others who are unemployed. “The youth can avail these facilities through the newly formed Human Resource Department,” he added.
Meanwhile, Manuel Fernandes from Margao and a relative of a job seeker presently in Malaysia, told Herald that agents have promised to send tickets to all 30 people who are still in Malaysia and get them back to Goa by Friday. “Till then, the police have assured us that they will detain all five agents at the Vasco police station,” added Fernandes.
