VASCO: With an aim to maintain communal harmony in the port town, Vasco Police organized an Iftar party for the Muslim community of Vasco to break their fast. Other community members were also invited to the Iftar party. The party was organised to set an example of peace and harmony among different religious groups and bring people closer.
Vasco DySP Nilesh Rane, who formed the peace committee in the port town after the communal disturbance, said that the celebration of religious festivals will be a continuous process. With Eid approaching a meeting was called on by the peace committee.
“After the recent tensions, we were planning to prepare and alert people with another peace committee meeting. However, the timing clashed with Roza and we decided to throw an Iftar party and invite members of different communities,” Rane said.
A Vasco local has praised the DySP’s initiative to form a peace committee. He said the presence of such a committee will avert any communal tension. “All our brothers from different religions attended this meeting. Incidentally the meeting coincided with Iftar, hence the police organized a party and we broke our fast in unity,” he said, adding that, the entire State of Goa should follow in the footsteps of Vasco Police Station.
