Vasco school ceiling collapses; students evacuated

VASCO: A portion of the ceiling at the entrance of the Government High School, Vasco (Main) came down crashing due to incessant rains on Saturday morning.

The students were immediately evacuated and have been temporarily relocated at the Government High School at Mangor.

On receiving the information, the authorities and local MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar visited the school, inspected it and announced that the entire school building will be repaired on urgent basis to prevent further loss of damage to property.

Also entire electrical fittings of the school building will be checked as students and staff complained of experiencing electric shock during monsoon. The heavy downpour has dampened the walls of the school, hence there were shocks due to leakage of electric current.

Meanwhile, the authorities have asked the PWD and other concerned officials to find out the cause of electric shocks.

The incident occurred when the students were attending their regular classes. Teachers rushed to the entrance of the school building where they found cement slabs fallen on the ground. Few staff members also felt the electric shock when they touched the damp walls. Principal and teachers immediately vacated the classes and took students to a safe place.

After taking stock of the situation, Salkar said that he had already informed the Chief Minister about the condition of the old heritage school building.

He said that the Chief Minister has asked him to submit the estimates for repairs and restoration of the building. The PWD officials will soon start the process of preparing the estimates, he added.

As per sources, incessant rains have dampened the walls of the school. Hence there is a possibility of open electric wire coming in contact with the wall.

The PWD officials have been asked to find the fault and take necessary precautions. The classes are expected to remain closed until the school building is repaired.
