Vasco’s clock tower to be restored

VASCO: In a dream-come-true for Vasco citizens, the heritage clock tower atop the Mormugao municipal market building will soon be renovated. Vasco leaders and heritage lovers had pushed for the tower’s restoration for several years, but nobody came forward to help. Vasco-based industrialist Swarna Bandekar finally offered Rs 25 lakh for the structure’s preservation.

On Thursday, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, Vasco councillor Krishna Salkar, and member of Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG) Prajal Sakhardande performed rituals at the site to formally start the restoration work, which is expected to commence within a week.
“The clock tower is Vasco’s heritage symbol, and it’s great that it will be repaired soon. It will surely bring back memories of when many people relied on the clock. We are glad that we achieved success in preserving one of Vasco’s monuments,” said Salkar.
