MARGAO: Agitated villagers of Chinchinim-Deussua caught a fish transporting vehicle red handed while dumping thermocol waste along the roadside at Deussua.
The vehicle which had come from Panjim to deliver fish to two starred resorts at Mobor-Cavelossim disposed off the thermocol waste along the Deussua road-side, but were caught red-handed by alert villagers.
What agitated the villagers the most was that the village road sides were cleaned of waste and litter only on March 3 with the involvement of village youths and institutions.
The vehicle occupants hailing from Tamil Nadu admitted that they had dumped the thermocol waste while they were returning from Mobor and were heading to Margao.
Local Panchayat ward member John has appealed to the government to come down heavily on unscrupulous elements dumping waste and garbage in open place. “If the government comes out with hefty fines and punishment, it will support our movement against these unscrupulous elements”, John said, while making an impassioned plea to the people not to dispose off their waste along the village road sides.
Village Sarpanch Jose Antonio Sequeira cautioned that villagers are maintaining vigil at selected points late night and in the wee hours to track down unscrupulous persons dumping waste along the road sides. “He made it clear that the Panchayat have come out with a rule that anyone found dumping waste along the road side will have to clear the entire stretch of waste, besides paying the fine”, he said, adding that a great deal of time and money has gone in clearing the waste and garbage by the village youth on March 3.
