MARGAO: A group of residents of Velim village have appealed to the village panchayat to shift the location for the Material
Recovery Facility (MRF) and set it up in a non-residential area.
However, the Sarpanch of Velim panchayat Veena Cardozo, informed media persons that the panchayat will stick to the location they have chosen and that they have to abide by the High Court (HC) deadline and set up the MRF at the earliest.
The Sarpanch added that this issue had been placed and discussed before the village gram sabha as well.
She further stated there won’t be any stench related issues as the MRF will have appropriate machinery to bale the waste.
Cardozo also rejected claims that the MRF is illegal and said all permissions had been obtained.
However, the group of locals said that they had sent their objections in April this year and also conducted a signature petition recently. They said they do not object to a garbage disposal plant but are only against the location. The villagers said that it should be shifted to another suitable site away from the residential locality.
They added that the present site has a school, a church and a public road in its vicinity as well and that the pollution caused due to the garbage would affect the children and senior citizens of the village.
