MARGAO: Even as the number of persons affected by dengue at Cutbona has touched 15 on Saturday, Velim Sarpanch Melvyn Sanches has urged local MLA Benjamin D’Silva to take up with the government liquidation of the dengue larvae on a priority basis.
While the MLA has promised to move the government and Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Monday, Sanches said the Velim panchayat would step in if the government cold shouldered the proposal. “We have suggested liquidation of the dengue larvae in the worst hit 50 meter area since fumigation and fogging operation has failed to give the desired result. The situation has not stabilised as yet with cases reported almost every day,” Sanches told Herald on Saturday, saying the Panchayat body would take up the work of liquidation if there’s no response from the government agencies.
Replying to a question, Sanches said that around four residential houses located close to the net mending sheds have been the worst affected. “Around five members of a single family have been affected close to the net mending shed. Besides, our village Panchayat member Veena Cardozo and her son for the adjoining house were affected by dengue too,” Sanches added.
Local villagers and president of Cutbona Boat Owners Union Seby Cardozo told Herald that two more persons from the locality tested positive for dengue fever, taking the number of persons affected by dengue till date to 15. “The villagers are closely monitoring the situation. We had already told the migrants to leave the locality and have opened the sluice gate to allow the stagnant water to flow,” Seby informed.
