Velsao activists get into brawl with advocate within police station premises, all three booked for affray

MARGAO: The Verna police on Saturday registered offences against two activists who have been leading protests against the Railway’s double-tracking project at Velsao, and a Margao-based advocate, after the three got into a scuffle at the Verna police station.

Based on the complaint lodged on behalf of the State, PSI Karishma Prabhu has registered offences against Goencho Ekvott founders Olencio Simoes of Cansaulim, Orville Dourado Rodrigues of Velsao, and Adv K Viegas  from Khareband, Margao, under Sections 323 and 160 of IPC.

Simoes and Dourado were at the station in connection with case of assault reported on Friday, when 10 members of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), including a Velsao panchayat member were accused of assaulting three residents of Velsao near a super market on Thursday night.

Adv K Viegas, who was advocate for the victims of the assault, was also at the police station at the same time, and an argument broke out between the three men, which escalated into a brawl. All three men sustained minor injuries, said the police complaint. Orville Rodrigues suffered scrapes on the knees and also wounded his elbow.

According to the police, PSI Utkrantrao Dessai has lodged the complaint stating that in the premises of Verna police station, the three individuals fought amongst themselves, thereby disturbing public peace, which is an offence of affray.

Meanwhile, Congress president Amit Patkar alleged that law and order situation in the State is at all-time low with attacks happening on innocent persons in the presence of police. “Is Goa going Uttar Pradesh way?” he questioned.

Referring to the attack on Congress Treasurer Orville Dourado and others just few metres away from Verna Police Station, Patkar condemned the government for its failure to nab the attackers despite written complaint being filed at the police station.

He demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to immediately give directions to the police officials to

arrest the attackers and order a probe of the entire incident.
