Vendor’s goods seized at Varunapuri junction

VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council’s market inspectors on Monday seized crates of fruits and vegetables from a vendor sitting at the Varunapuri junction road side to clear the obstruction caused for smooth traffic movement.

A source from the MMC said the drive was held on the instructions of Chief Officer.

“There were several complaints before the Chief Officer about the obstruction of traffic movement at the Varunapuri road stretch. To clear this problem, the drive was carried out”, the source said.

“A councillor, however, rushed at the municipality and tried to negotiate with the MMC staff questioning them about this action”, he added.

Peter Andrade, local from Vasco said that there should not be any interference of councillors in smooth functioning of municipality staff. “If such interference by councillors is allowed, then it will encourage people to do more illegalities. It is important for the municipality staff to work freely and in a fair way.”

Vikram Sarmalkar, social activist from Vasco, said “Such incidences wherein councillors intervening and demanding unnecessary favours from municipality staff by safeguarding the violators should not be tolerated.”

“If our elected representatives are ignoring illegalities and backing such people then the purpose to have a local governing body will have no meaning,” he added.
