Verna-based pharma firm cancels interviews in Mumbai following Opposition outcry

PANJIM: The Verna-based pharma company on Wednesday cancelled the walk-in interview scheduled at Boisar, Mumbai for several openings in the Verna facility following outcry by opposition over the matter.

In a letter to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the pharma company stated, “Due to some unavoidable circumstances and your personal interventions, we are cancelling the above-mentioned walk-in interview planned at Boisar, Mumbai location on May 24.”

Earlier in the day, the opposition parties had alleged that the company wanted to deny the job opportunities to Goans and had hence planned the walk-in interviews outside the State. They had also sought the Chief Minister’s intervention in the matter.

Congress vice president Sunil Kawthankar said that at last strong opposition from political parties forced the Sawant-led BJP government to wake up and intervene. He demanded that the government must audit percentage of Goan employees in all pharma industries across the State and enforce and ensure 80 per cent jobs for Goans.

The Goa Forward Party (GFP) president and MLA Vijai Sardesai urged the government to take immediate action to eliminate discrimination against Goans.

It was unacceptable that a company, which benefits from operating in the State, chooses to hold interviews outside the State, effectively shutting the door on candidates. This was a poor reflection of not only the company’s ethics but also the government’s inability to enforce policies that prioritise the employment of Goa.  Sardesai demanded enforcement of the proposed 80 per cent job reservation to Goans in the private sector. The government must act to protect the interests of youth.
