Verna P’yat to probe release of sewage into Sodovim Lake

Nature lovers have filed a complaint with Goa Pollution Board

MARGAO: The village panchayat of Verna has taken serious note of the issue of sewage and wastewater being released into the traditional lake at Sodovim-Verna, highlighted in Friday’s edition of O Heraldo. In response, the panchayat has decided to conduct a joint inspection of the site at the earliest.

Meanwhile, concerned nature lovers have filed a complaint with the Goa State Pollution Control Board, demanding action against the violator.

Nazia Amita D’Costa, Sarpanch of the village panchayat, personally investigated the matter on Friday and intends to write to the Health Centre regarding the issue.

Citizens and nature lovers in Sodovim were shocked to discover the continuous release of sewage and wastewater into the traditional lake in recent days. 

After the news report was published in O Heraldo, the panchayat deliberated on the matter and collected additional evidence from the site, further substantiating the release of sewage into the lake. Sarpanch D’Costa emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, 

“The panchayat has taken note of the matter and will write to the Health Centre for a joint inspection. It is crucial to initiate necessary action to protect the lake and its biodiversity.” She also 

emphasized the direct impact on biodiversity and the environment.

Citizens have reiterated their demand for swift action against the individual responsible for polluting the traditional lake. Furthermore, a complaint was filed by a nature lover with the Goa State Pollution Control Board on Friday. 

The complaint highlights the pollution of Sodovim Lake due to the discharge of wastewater and sewage. It points 

out that this pollution has also affected the nearby spring, posing a threat to human life. 

The complainant requests immediate action to preserve the natural water resources.
