In a riveting showdown that lived up to the intensity of a final, Verna Sports Club emerged victorious by a 6-5 tie-breaker against Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda, claiming the 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup. The highly anticipated match took place at the Chandor Church Sports Complex on Sunday, December 10, 2023, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.
From the onset, Verna Sports Club dominated the proceedings, nearly securing an early lead in the second minute when Ajoy Satorker’s powerful strike from the top of the box was skillfully saved by the Fatorda keeper. Cyrus Noronha subsequently broke the deadlock for Verna in the 9th minute with a header off a corner kick, giving them a 1-0 advantage. Despite valiant efforts from Fatorda, both teams failed to alter the scoreline by the halftime whistle due to commendable goalkeeping performances.
As the second half unfolded, Verna continued its dominance, with players like Imamsab and Romario creating opportunities. The 45th minute saw a spectacular long-range effort from Romario hitting the crossbar, maintaining the status quo. Fatorda’s Francis Andrade attempted a powerful volley in the 48th minute, thwarted by Verna’s goalkeeper, Jose Silveira. A closely contested match saw Hanslum of Fatorda equalizing in the 57th minute, sending the game into a tie-breaker.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Andrus, Ajay, Romario, Cyrus, and Frazer scored for Verna, while Don Bosco responded with successful shots from Necil, Francis, Cavin, and Mario. Verna emerged triumphant with a final score of 6-5, securing the championship title.
The teams were introduced to Chief Guest Mr. Altone D’costa, MLA of Quepem Constituency, and other dignitaries, adding to the grandeur of the event. Individual accolades were presented to outstanding players, including Jose Silveira of Verna Sports Club for Best Goalkeeper, Cyrus Noronha for Best Defender, Romario Da Costa for Best Midfielder, and Francis Andrade for Best Striker of the Finals. Romario Da Costa was named Man of the Match, while Jose Silveira earned the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.
The closing ceremony witnessed a warm welcome by Patwin Fizardo, President of Guirdolim Club, and a vote of thanks delivered by Darwin Cardoso, General Secretary of Guirdolim Club.
The 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup proved to be a memorable spectacle, showcasing exceptional talent and sportsmanship from both participating teams.
