VASCO: Verna Village Panchayat on Tuesday inaugurated a biodigestor plant to treat wet garbage which will further generate biogas and fertilisers after wet waste being treated scientifically.
Also the foundation stone to set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) was laid which will make Verna Panchayat first to dispose of wet waste scientifically.
On the occasion, Nuvem Constituency MLA Wilfred D’Sa stated that the MRF shed foundation stone has been laid, which I feel might be the first facility to come up in the State. Sarpanch of Verna Village Panchayat was pursuing this project as she wanted the garbage issue to be put in place as in her own ward there are tenants and labourers staying.
Verna Sarpanch Lourena Fernandes informed that it was a necessity to bring eco-friendly system to dispose garbage. We were finding it tough to tackle wet waste due to the large number of migrants staying in some parts of the wards, who are working in the industrial area. I hope this eco-friendly waste plant will be successful. The panchayat will be making biogas from this wet waste treatment plant and also plans to establish a small kitchen garden. We will also have a bailing machine for the dry garbage soon.
Prasidh Naik, Block Development Officer Mormugao said that they have the direction from the High Court and National Green Tribunal that each panchayat should have a decentralised MRF at the same time biodigestor.
