PANJIM: Veteran journalist Cyril D’Cunha died on Wednesday. He was 91. The funeral will be held today, December 14 at Holy Family Church, Porvorim, at 3.30 pm. The body will be brought to his residence at 1 pm for all to pay respects. The funeral cortege will leave his residence at Journalists’ Colony Porvorim at 3 pm.
The Goa Union on Journalists (GUJ) has mourned the passing away of veteran journalist Cyril D’Cunha.
A recipient of the State government’s T B Cunha Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism for 2022, Cyril was founder president of the Sports Journalists Association of Goa and founder member of Goa Union of Journalists, Goa Football Association and the Goa Amateur Athletic Association.
He was the founder editor of The Konkan Mail, Goa’s first bilingual weekly in English and Konkani, and Goal, Goa’s first sports fortnightly. He was also the editor of Vishal Jagruti.
Cyril worked for several publications, prominent among those being ‘The Navhind Times’, ‘The Times of India’, ‘Free Press Journal’, ‘Financial Express’, ‘The Indian Post’, ‘Independent’ and ‘Afternoon Despatch & Courier’.
His international work includes writing for Tribuna (Macau), Noticias de Portugal, a news agency in Portugal, and NCWC news agency in the United States.
Cyril authored the book ‘Soccer and Goa’, a State government publication that documents the history of Goan football. Cyril was also a fine sportsperson and captained Goa’s first hockey team that took part at the National Championships at Madurai in 1967.
