MARGAO: Goa Police registered the FIR against Navelim youth Edwin Coelho on the same day while registering an FIR against suspended PSI Stanley Gomes.
Family and counsel for Edwin Coelho strongly condemned the registration of FIR and expressed that it is an act of revenge.
“This is what happened with a common person in Goa at the police station who questions the police. You get brutalised and if you show the courage to speak up a false FIR is filed against you,” said Alison Coelho, cousin of victim Edwin Coelho.
“This is the high time that the senior police officers and government should intervene to stop the ‘dadagiri’ of police. I appeal to all the ministers, Chief Minister to hand over this case of assault to any other agency for unbiased investigation,” said Coelho.
Ditendra Naik, Police Inspector of Margao Police Station while speaking to Herald informed that based on the complaint of PSI Stanley Gomes on November 25, police have registered an FIR against Edwin Coelho of Navelim.
“We have not delayed in registering an FIR as the matter was under inquiry. After proper inquiry we have decided to register the FIR,” Naik replied to Herald on Thursday when asked about the delay in registration of FIR.
Adv Seoula Vas, the counsel of Edwin Coelho has also expressed surprise that police have registered a false FIR. She said that the FIR is an act of revenge and nothing else.
“We are going to take up the matter in the court following proper procedures step by step,” she said.
PSI Stanley Gomes had assaulted Edwin Coelho at police station without any reason in which Coelho’s eardrum was ruptured. After the public uproar, the said PSI was suspended and after a week the FIR was registered against the suspended PSI. Surprisingly on the same day, an FIR was registered against Coelho under Sections 504, 353, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
