MARGAO: Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai announced that the ground at Multipurpose School would be expanded by demolishing the two weak buildings and that this expansion would be done before the next parliamentary elections.
He also announced plans to hand over to the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) the open spaces gifted to local bodies. However, he noted that there have been complaints that playgrounds developed by SAG are not available for the local youth to play and use and stressed the need to rectify this problem.
He was speaking at a function to commission the automatic pitch roller given to the Multipurpose School by South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar under the MPLAD scheme and complimented Sawaikar for thinking out of the box to provide this much needed machinery.
“There was a time when one could see MP funds being used only to procure ambulances or hearse vans and there was a need to think out of the box and that is what Narendra has done and I compliment him,” he said.
Appreciating that Goans are making a mark in different sports events, he exhorted the youngsters to make a mark in cricket too.
Sawaikar confessed that it took him more than two years to deliver this machine since the guidelines had to be studied and interpreted properly. “I am happy that this is the first centre in Goa to have a dedicated automatic pitch roller,” he said.
Director of Sports Authority of Goa V M Prabhudessai listing out some Goans who have made their presence felt in cricket at the national level and even represented the country in international matches, said that he was proud that one such player had come from the Margao Cricket Academy.
