MARGAO: Laxmibai Sardesai, a noted Gandhian, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 84. She was the mother of Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and sister of Gandhian and Dnyanpeeth Award winner Ravindra Kelekar.
Her mortal remains will be kept at her son’s house until Sunday, while the funeral announcements were expected to be made on Friday. The Fatorda MLA, who is out of the country, is expected to arrive in Goa on Saturday evening.
Laxmiba was a soft-spoken woman with incredible patience. Her stint at Mahila Ashram in Wardha and Vishva Bharti University at Shantiniketan shaped her life, which was initially devoted to providing moral, financial and psychological support to Goa’s political prisoners in Lisbon.
After marrying renowned entomologist Dr J B Sardesai, Laxmibai shifted to Portugal and had subsequently travelled to many parts of the world.
