Vijay Diwas: Commemorating India’s Historic Triumph and the Birth of a Nation

As the nation observes Vijay Diwas, December 16 stands not only as a date etched in history but as a testament to India’s resolute stance for democracy and the birth of a new nation. This day marks the pivotal moment in 1971 when India’s valiant armed forces secured a decisive victory over Pakistan, culminating in the signing of the Instrument of Surrender in Dhaka.

Vijay Diwas is a day of reverence and pride, a time to pay homage to the courage and sacrifice of those who stood tall during the 1971 war. It symbolizes India’s unwavering commitment to supporting the self-determination of nations and upholding democratic principles.

The conflict was triggered by the oppressive Pakistani military regime’s genocide against the people of East Pakistan following the 1970 elections. As tension escalated, India extended refuge to those fleeing the conflict. Pakistan’s airstrikes on Indian airbases on December 3, 1971, propelled then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to authorize a full-scale war.

Under the leadership of General Sam Manekshaw, India initiated a resolute military campaign, supporting Bangladeshi nationalist groups and executing ‘Operation Trident’ to target the Karachi Port. After 13 days of intense battle, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi of Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender, marking the end of hostilities with the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers.

Beyond its historical significance, Vijay Diwas fosters stronger cultural and political ties between India and Bangladesh. The observance is not just confined within India’s borders; Bangladesh also commemorates ‘Bijoy Dibos,’ celebrating its liberation from Pakistan.

Today, both India and Bangladesh mark Vijay Diwas with parades, events, and ceremonies, underscoring the enduring camaraderie between the two nations.

Vijay Diwas remains a symbol of triumph over adversity, a celebration of bravery, and a reminder of the strength that lies within unity and determination
