Villagers divided over setting up of garbage treatment plant in Bethora

PONDA: Controversy has erupted over setting up wet garbage treatment plant at Vaidya Nagar in Bethora-Nirankal-Konshe-Kodar Panchayat since past few months. As of now, it is learnt that installing the roof of the garbage plant is pending.

While, one group of villagers including Sarpanch Madu Khandepar support the material recovery facility (MRF) shed claiming it is the need of hour and it cannot be shifted elsewhere at the last stage, another group is strongly opposed to the project citing it is close to a residential area and may lead to villagers getting affected by the stench. These villagers were backed by one panchayat member Durgaprasad Vaidya and were demanding that the construction work on MRF shed be stopped immediately and threatened to approach the court for redressal of their grievances.

In the recently held gram sabha on January 7, villagers were divided on the issue with one group supporting and another opposing the MRF. Earlier in December 2023, over 100 villagers opposed the project and even had led a morcha to the panchayat ghar and had demanded to scrap the project.

Khandeparkar said except for one panchayat member, the entire panchayat body is supporting the project. Work on the shed had started long back and already 90 percent work is completed.
