MARGAO: A joint inspection conducted by the Raia panchayat and the Health Centre in Loutolim has revealed a grave health hazard caused by the discharge of wastewater into public gutters near the scrap yard in Arlem, Raia.
In response, both the local body and government authorities have decided to conduct another inspection next week to determine the source of this wastewater discharge.
Oswald D’Souza, Deputy Sarpanch of Raia panchayat, has assured villagers that stop work notices will be issued to all ongoing construction projects in the area, based on complaints received from residents.
The same scrap yard and alleged illegal structures in its vicinity were previously brought to attention when villagers raised concerns and accused the panchayat body of inaction.
The villagers, asserting that the structures in the area are completely illegal, demanded swift action, including initiating the process of demolition with the relevant authorities.
D’Souza emphasized that the illegal structures in the area were not constructed during his tenure and stated that the panchayat takes such matters very seriously.
Sarpanch Judas Quadros
informed O Heraldo that the wastewater was being released into the gutters from
unidentified sources. He stated, “Another joint inspection will be conducted, and all slabs on the gutters will be removed to
trace the sources of wastewater discharge.”
