The gram sabha of Ambelim Village Panchayat on Sunday has resolved to oppose granting of any permission for a scrap yard on a land at Goencheabhatt.
At the gram sabha meeting held on Sunday, agitated members, especially from the Goencheabhatt area raised apprehensions that the land in question will be used for dumping scrap and demanded that the panchayat respect the sentiments of the local people.
The members pointed out that they are given to understand that agricultural land admeasuring 10,000 has been sold out to an outsider in the area and apprehended that the same might be used for scrap dumping.
The locals told the panchayat body that they are ready to purchase the property in question and use the same for agricultural purposes. The meeting witnessed uproar when Sarpanch Cruz Silva refused to allow discussion on the application field by Rafael Cardozo vis-à-vis a road on grounds that the application was not signed by Cardozo.
Cardozo demanded to know from the sarpanch how he can disallow discussion on the application when the same was entered by the panchayat office. He later told newsmen that the sarpanch declined to allow discussion on his application for a road for the Novowaddo locality of Ambelim on flimsy grounds.
He said around 25 household owners from Novowaddo had been demanded a road for the last many years, adding that they wanted to discuss the issue with the panchayat body at today’s gram sabha meeting.
Sarpanch Cruz Silva, however, pointed out that the meeting could not take up for discussion the road proposal since the application was not signed by anyone.
Silva, however, said that the road in question has been proposed to be taken up for construction under the RDA.
The issue over the illegal extraction and storage of sand was also discussed during the meeting.
