Violation of Silent Zone Declaration Amid Turtle Nesting Season Raises Concerns in Mandrem. Morjim & Ashwem

Despite the government’s declaration of Mandrem, Morjim, Ashwem, and neighboring areas as silent zones during the turtle nesting period, reports of loud night music persist, particularly near beachside clubs. Locals are raising questions about the blatant disregard for rules, especially during a critical nesting season for turtles.

Expressing dismay over the situation, local resident Mayur Shetgaonkar highlighted the cultural significance of turtles to Hindu Goans and the contradictory behavior of outsiders, driving away these revered creatures with loud music. He pointed out that turtles are drawn to these areas due to the soft sand but are being disturbed by the noise.

The issue has raised serious concerns about the enforcement of regulations, with locals expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of action by authorities despite directives from the High Court. Residents emphasized that the Goa Pollution Control Board, law enforcement agencies and other authorities have failed to take necessary measures to ensure compliance with the silent zone regulations, leading to ongoing disturbances during this critical period for turtle nesting.
