Violence against women on the rise in Salcete

MARGAO: Violence and crimes against women have been on the rise in Salcete taluka with incidents of rape and kidnappings reported in various police stations have become a cause of concern.

At present two girls, including one college student, were reported missing from Maina-Curtorim and Quepem. While one college student returned home, there is no trace of the other till date.

Police records have revealed some startling figures in the five months as nine rape cases have been registered in Salcete. While three rape cases were registered by the Cuncolim Police, two each were registered at the Colva, Fatorda and Maina-Curtorim Police Station. All were however solved.

In the year 2021, of the 13 rape cases registered at various police stations in Salcete, the maximum were registered by the Cuncolim police, three by Margao police, two each by Maina-Curtorim and Colva while one was registered by the Fatorda police. Police said that all the cases were solved and the alleged accused chargesheeted.

Again in 2020, of the nine rape cases registered at the Salcete police stations, three each were registered by Maina-Curtorim and Cuncolim police while two were registered at Margao and one by the Fatorda police.

In 2019, of 11 rape cases which were registered at Salcete Police Stations, four were registered by Margao police, three by Colva Police, two by Maina-Curtorim police, and one each by Cuncolim and Fatorda police from January to September.

Police records reveal that in 2021, 7 cases of kidnapping were registered of which 5 were detected in Salcete. Of four kidnapping cases registered by Margao police, two were detected while Maina-Curtorim police while Colva and Fatorda police booked 1 case each and managed to solve all. 

In the year 2020, Salcete police stations booked eight cases of kidnapping and detected six. Of the three cases registered by Maina-Curtorim Police, two were detected while both the cases registered by Margao police were solved.

One case was registered by Cuncolim police and same was detected while 2 cases registered by Fatorda police, one was detected.
