Viral infection kills pigs at Margao

Locals demanded action from the Margao Municipal Council against the alleged illegal piggery.

MARGAO: There was a tense situation at Modsai, Margao on Friday following the death of around 15 pigs belonging to a local piggery.

While the neighbouring residents were upset about this and raised concerns about a potential health hazard, an inspection was carried out by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department and the South Goa District Collectorate.

A veterinary doctor from the Veterinary Hospital at Sonsodo and the Salcete Mamlatdar visited the site and prima facie, the cause of death was attributed to a viral infection. Dr Malory Ferrao said a police complaint would have to be filed for the post-mortem to be conducted.

However, Ferrao advised the piggery owner to get the remaining pigs administered antiviral therapy so that the pigs do not suffer from any secondary bacterial infection and have their immunity boosted.

Responding to queries from mediapersons, she said, “The recent case of a dozen deaths of pigs in Curtorim was also due to the viral infection that has been doing the rounds.”
