MARGAO: There was a frosty exchange over India’s renewable energy targets in the Lok Sabha, with South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes accusing the Union government of prioritising coal production over clean energy goals – a move that has sparked widespread protests back home in Goa.
Initiating a discussion on the country’s progress towards the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes took aim at the government’s energy policies, particularly in the context of growing opposition to the expansion of coal infrastructure in Goa. It may be recalled that there have been protests in Goa over the increased handling of coal at the Mormugao port, as well as the ramped-up transportation of the coal through Goa’s rail and road networks.
“Got an opportunity to interject and ask a supplementary question on renewable energy vis-a-vis Sustainable development goals, set by the United Nations and to be achieved by 2030. Goal no. 07 states that countries should reduce carbon footprint and increase renewable energy, that means reduce the usage/production of coal,” said Fernandes.
“I was appalled, shocked and saddened to hear the Union Minister’s reply praising Prime Minister Modi for doubling the coal production,” Fernandes said, referring to comments made by Prahlad Joshi, the Union Minister of Coal and Power.
Earlier, Fernandes noted that the initial reviews of India’s SDG performance had revealed lacklustre progress, and he pressed Joshi on whether there were any concrete mechanisms in place to meet the 2030 renewable energy targets outlined in the global goals.
Fernandes pointed out that SDG 7, which calls for affordable and clean energy, explicitly states that countries should reduce their carbon footprint and increase renewable energy sources. However, he noted that India has simultaneously been ramping up coal production, which appears to contradict these sustainability targets.
However, the Minister defended the government’s record, praising PM Modi for expanding the country’s coal output.
