The Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) scheme was introduced by the Central government, which announced the establishment of 166 research and diagnostics laboratories in 2016.

“Such a lab does not exist in western India and is a first of its kind. People from Karnataka and Maharashtra will be able to avail of the services provided by this lab,” GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said.

The lab will commence operations in one or two months. The Centre has provided 90 per cent of the funding, while the State spent 10 per cent of the amount to set up this lab.
