PANJIM: Valpoi MLA and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Friday took up the cause of farmers with Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte, requesting him to extend the deadline for perfecting their rights and titles over Alvara land.
The Goa Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Act, 2017, setting a deadline for perfecting rights and titles over Alvara lands, was notified six months ago. However, the farmers fear that the six-month time granted for perfecting their rights and titles was insufficient and that they would lose their Alvara lands if they fail to perfect their rights and titles. And in that case, the Alvara land would revert to the government.
Hence, the farmers approached Rane seeking extension of time to carry out the formalities to perfect their rights and titles over Alvara lands.
Rane who led the delegation of farmers to Khaunte on Friday stated that it has not been mentioned in any clause of section or sub-section in the notified Goa Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill, 2017 that the occupants of Alvara Lands, who do not comply with this notification or of those who are not cultivating the granted land would revert to the government.
“This paragraph is causing tremendous fear and anxiety in the minds of the people of Sattari. The lands have been in the possession of the people for generations together,” Rane said in a memorandum submitted to Khaunte.
The farmers have requested that the rates be reduced from Rs 5 per square metre to Re 1.
