BICHOLIM: The residents from Vithalapur Karapur in Sanquelim have demanded to open the lone foot bridge for vehicular traffic to bridge the gap between their village and Sanquelim city.
It may be stated that there is a small metal bridge over Walvanti River across Vithalapur and Sanquelim market. People use this bridge for their daily commute and it also helps school going students to go to the city.
Earlier, it was just wooden bridge and later after the renovation it was given iron plates. But a barricade was put on both the sides restricting the entry of two wheelers including cycles.
“This is a Portuguese era bridge and serves a link between Vithalapur and Sanquelim city. Earlier two wheelers, especially cycles were plying from this way and as the bridge was broken we had demanded for an iron bridge. But what surprised us was the barricade that restricted the entry of even the two wheelers.” Adv Gurudas Naik demanded to make the bridge available for vehicular traffic.
“If one travels from this bridge he can reach Sanquelim market just in two minutes but people have to either take a detour or park their vehicle near the bride and walk to the other side,” Adv Naik informed.
“There are some who claim that because of the barricade it becomes difficult to carry material from the market. Barricade has become a problem and we demand that it should be removed and this bridge should be made open for two wheelers,” Vishnu Menkurkar said.
