VASCO: Villagers of Voddant-Vasco on Monday confronted the officials of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) over the ongoing expansion work of the shipyard. GSL has stated that the modernisation project, which is under implementation, is of national importance.

The villagers alleged that GSL has encroached on the government nullah which leads to the sea and that the expansion has led to the nullah being narrowed. They fear that the rainwater will not flow into the sea, as during high tide, the sea water enters the nullah and blocks rainwater flowing in the sea and this could lead to flooding.
As no solution was coming forth, Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza sought the intervention of Mormugao Deputy Collector Gaurish Shankwalkar, who rushed to the site and directed the GSL officials to stop the ongoing work and called for a meeting between the villagers and GSL officials at his office at Vasco.
During the meeting, the villagers brought to the notice of Shankwalkar the problem faced by them.
Meanwhile, GSL in its communiqué stated, “GSL would like to reiterate that the modernisation project being implemented at GSL is within its boundaries and at water front. This is essential for the security for the yard, which is a defence installation.
