MAPUSA: Nerul villagers on Monday decided to voluntarily lockdown the village for next eight days from 7 am to 12 noon.
The locals informed that the stores dealing with essential commodities will remain open. The villagers took the decision following a spike in COVID positive cases in the village during the past one week. They said that infected persons may have moved in the village and to prevent the virus from spreading further, they have decided to voluntarily lockdown the village for next eight days.
Meanwhile, a special joint meeting was conveyed by the Nerul Panchayat with Deputy Collector I Akshay Potekar, Deputy Collector II Mamu Hage, Candolim Health Centre Health Officer Dr Roshan Nazareth, officials from Porvorim Police Station, Electricity Department and others to educate the locals on the mini containment zone and buffer zone created in Fattawado. The officials advised the locals to follow MHA norms and not to panic.
Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar was also present.
Potekar and Hage explained to the people that mini containment and buffer zone are created in Fattawado to prevent further spread of virus in the village by restricting entry and exit of people.
Deputy Collector also instructed the panchayat to co-operate with the Fire Department to sanitise the village.
Dr Nazareth explained the importance of social distancing and wearing of face masks.
