Wachasundar, the first to be arrested in the JICA bribery scam, has spent 46 days in custody since his arrest on July 27. He had immediately applied for bail but withdrawn it only to apply afresh in August. This was rejected by the court on August 17.
After being remanded to judicial custody, Wachasundar reapplied for bail before the same judge, which was rejected on Thursday. Crime Branch (CB) had opposed the bail arguing that Wachasundar has not been cooperating with the investigation and there is likelihood he would interfere with witnesses and evidence.
Meanwhile, the High Court of Bombay at Goa has begun hearing CB’s application challenging the special court’s order granting anticipatory bail to former chief minister Digambar Kamat. The matter, which was partly heard on Thursday, will continue on Friday afternoon. The prosecution led by PP S Rivonkar requested to study the case diary as CB’s previous plea was rejected citing lapses in case diary.
