PANJIM: It could be politics; or it could be pushing an issue close to the heart of many Goans; but a BJP legislator has been making waves recently. BJP St Andre legislator Vishnu Wagh today held another meeting at Arambol, pushing for legalising bull fights on the heels of the one held at Goa Velha, and surprisingly getting a good turnout.
“Nobody expected us to get a crowd. But there were at least 2000 people,” Wagh told Herald. He has been pushing for legalising the states traditional dhirio, making it more professional and ‘revenue earning’ for the State.
“For safety sake, one can cap the horns of the bulls; proper stadiums can be earmarked with proper veterinary services. This will also garner revenue for the state,” Wagh said, adding that the dhirio was a tradition in Goa.
The maverick MLA who was elected on a BJP ticket in a traditional Congress stronghold also met NCP supremo and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on his recent visit to the State.
When asked about it, the MLA, at first hesitant, said that he had indeed met the Union minister. “My constituency is an agrarian one. We get a lot of help from ICAR, by way of seeds, etc. I met Pawar so that I could ask him to give some more finance for the institution (to indirectly benefit my constituency),” Wagh told Herald.
Incidentally, Pawar, who was in the state with his family, also met his party leaders and has told them that they should also work and strengthen their base in the South where this time they have basically no much support except in Sanguem where their youth leader contested elections last time after Francisco ‘Mikky’ Pacheco left and floated his own party.
Incidentally, Pawar and Mikky also met at a popular eating place in South Goa. But the visit was a “coincidence” say the Loutolim MLA’s close confidants, pointing out that Pawar was out for a meal with his family when the two met, albeit briefly.
