Bicholim: After repeated requests, the first traffic signal in Bicholim has been installed by the authorities at Shantadurga High School circle, on Friday.
The people expressed satisfaction over the same. It may be recalled that this has been the demand of the locals for a long time after some untoward incidents had been reported in the area. Recently, there was another accident, following which, a section of society blamed the Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar and the municipality for installing Shivaji Maharaj statue at center of the road.
The Bicholim Bachao Abhiyaan (BBA) led by former MLA Naresh Sawal blamed the authorities including the elected representatives for the accidents at the spot. There was a section of society, especially the followers of Shivaji Maharaj, opposing the BBA and there was verbal tussle between them wherein some of them were also arrested.
Patnekar had hinted that there was a need of traffic signal at the spot. On Friday, the three poles for the traffic signal were installed by the authorities.
“It is really good news that Bicholim is getting a much-needed traffic signal. There is lot of traffic movement and there is also a school next to this circle, which made it necessary for installing of traffic signal at the spot,” said former councillor, Narayan Betkikar.
He added, “This would lessen the accidents in the area and confusion caused during heavy traffic. We are happy at last our efforts have turned into reality.”
