MARGAO: In a move that will offer much relief to this section of the public, a senior citizens counter was opened on the ground floor of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday. The counter and its personnel will offer dedicated services to senior citizens visiting the MMC for various works.
“The idea behind the counter is that we make it easy and friendly for senior citizens to get their work done. Senior citizens visit the office regularly to pay their house taxes, some license related works or for other documents. Whatever it is, they can visit the counter and they will be attended to here directly as opposed to having to go here or there,” said MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar. There was a function to launch the senior citizens counter, which was attended by the MMC councillors, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and the senior citizen federation members. Anil Pai and other members of the federation praised the MMC for getting these arrangements made so quickly. They pointed out that they had a Christmas function on December 21 where they had raised this with the Chairperson and MLA and that within 10 days’ time, the counter was set up after getting the necessary approvals from the council. The Senior citizens added that they feel they have been given the respect due to them.
It may be recalled that the setting up of such a counter has been a long pending demand of the senior citizen groups that have often complained about the hardships they have faced in getting their work done, which included visiting the MMC building. The senior citizens who were in attendance for the inaugural function were also informed by MMC that they will be given preferential treatment when it comes to parking their two-wheelers in front of the building. MMC Councillor Sagun Naik also said that work on the multi-storey pay parking facility should begin soon, which will help those who have difficulty in finding parking.
