Walkathon creates Parkinson’s disease awareness as tribute to Chris Perry

MARGAO: Glenn Perry, the son of legendary Goan musician Chris Perry, with the support of volunteers, organised a ‘walkathon’ in Margao on Friday evening to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease.

The walk began at the late Chris Perry’s house behind Holy Spirit Church, Margao, and it went around the Church and culminated at the Chris Perry Road. “My father, Chris Perry, Goa’s music legend, died of Parkinsons’s disease 22 years ago on January 25, 2002. I know my father, he was a strong man but he would cry because of Parkinson’s as there is no cure,” said Glenn. “He would tremble, he could not play his own trumpet and that was the sad part,” said Glenn. “I have been doing many events throughout the years but I have decided to do this walkathon in memory of my father, to honour him and to raise awareness about Parkinson’s because many people do not know what it is.

“People often mistake tremors in their elderly parents as a natural part of aging, unaware that it could be Parkinson’s. They have to be diagnosed. Although there is no cure, it can be managed with proper medication,” Glenn added.
