MERCES: Walter D’Souza was elected unopposed as the sarpanch of Merces at a special meeting held in the panchayat office, on Tuesday.
The chair had fallen vacant after former sarpanch Yateen Palekar had stepped down to honour the agreement of sharing the top post among panchas of the ruling panel.
Six panchas of the ruling panel namely Walter D’Souza, Yateen Palekar, Prakash Naik, Priyanka Naik, Socorina Braganza and Assis Fernandes and two opposition panchas namely Girish Uskaikar and Hemangi Golatkar were present. Panchas Greta Monteiro, Lavu Hoble and Sandhya Hoble were absent.
After his election, Walter D’Souza informed media that solving the garbage problem will be his main priority along with finding a solution to the erratic power supply in the village. D’Souza also informed that the panchayat has already moved a file for acquisition of land to build a panchayat ghar which will house a community hall, post office, PWD office, health centre and other amenities. However, when asked to reveal the area where the panchayat ghar will be built, he refused to divulge details while also refusing to state whether the gram sabha has been consulted over the issue.
