CURCHOREM: Not only potholes but the rising number stray cattle loitering on various roads in Curchorem also pose threat to motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders.
Last week, the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) took the initiative and impounded around 48 stray cattle and rehabilitated the bovines at the Gomantak Goseva Mahasangh (GGM), Sikeri as the civic body has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the organisation.
Locals say that the cattle are basically seen in the areas of village panchayat of Assolda and Xeldem in Curchorem constituency.
When contacted Xeldem Sarpanch Kavita Dessai admitted to the menace and stated that they neither had a pound keeper nor did they receive any funds to tackle the strays.
CCMC Chairperson Dr Jasmine Braganza stated that the GGM team will visit the Curchorem area every Saturday and Sunday and impound stray cattle if they are found on roads. “The owner has to produce documents including a veterinary doctor’s certified letter claiming the ownership of the cattle to GGM, and can take back their animals after paying necessary penalites and expenditure occurred including transportation and impounding charges within 15 days,” Dr Braganza said and promised to give the people stray cattle free roads.
Meanwhile, after highlighting the issues of potholes on roads here which occurred due to work of laying of pipeline for Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), Assistant Engineer of PWD (Roads) Quepem, Rohan Dessai said that the road had caved in due to the improper filling process around the maintenance chambers of the STP line by the contractors and added that accordingly he had informed the General Manager of the Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Limited (SIDCGL) about it.
