PANJIM: Amidst ongoing tension between India and Pakistan and country mourning the deaths of 40 CRPF personnel, Congress in Goa has demanded cancellation of Carnival festival, beginning from March 2.
Addressing media persons on Thursday, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar questioned BJP-led government whether holding Carnival celebration when the entire nation is mourning and tensed, is called patriotism.
“BJP government in Goa only knows to shed crocodile tears to show their patriotism. This government will tell us stories of nationalism but will go ahead and celebrate Carnival,” Chodankar said.
“When you tell people that you are sad you are going ahead to celebrate Carnival. Today we have to be with our Army and our soldiers,” he commented.
“It is very clear that when our nation is fighting on the border, how can you have all these celebrations? Is the BJP’s patriotism only to show the people?” Chodankar questioned.
Congress leader said that the party has been demanding that the government cancel all the events. “If you are really concerned about the nation then stop all this entertainment,” he demanded.
The four-day annual carnival festival will begin on March 2 with float parade in Panjim.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chodankar said that while tension prevails on the border, Prime Minister is not coming out of his election campaign schedule. He alleged that ruling BJP is politicising the terror attack.
“The prime minister is not cancelling anything. Our jawans are fighting and dying, our wing commander (Abhinandan) is struggling in Pakistan and our prime minister is in a different mood,” he said.
Meanwhile, Congress has demanded filing of FIR against those involved in illegal allotment of Porvorim comunidade plots.
