MARGAO: The bio-methanation plant at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) market has been releasing untreated wastewater into the open fields, causing pollution and health hazards. Despite previous concerns raised and temporary actions taken, the authorities have failed to address the ongoing issue, leaving residents and shoppers disgusted.
Citizens of Margao have expressed anger and demanded immediate action against those operating the bio-methanation plant, which was set up to treat wet waste. The stench emanating from the market area has left residents and visitors deeply concerned.
Upon inspection, it was evident that the untreated wastewater from the plant was directly flowing into the open fields, spreading an unbearable stink throughout the area. Earlier in May, the issue was highlighted, leading to temporary measures being taken to halt the discharge. However, the problem has persisted, and the authorities seem indifferent to the health hazard faced by the market’s visitors and local residents.
George D’Souza, a concerned citizen of Margao, expressed frustration and criticized the civic body for its inaction. “This has been going on for the last several days. The authorities should have implemented some measures to stop the pollution of the open fields. Considering the prevailing situation, it looks like the authorities are least bothered about the pollution here,” D’Souza told O Heraldo.
In response, Srinet Kothwale, Chief Officer of Margao Municipal Council and Additional Collector of the South district, assured prompt action. He stated that such activities are unacceptable, and he will instruct the responsible personnel at the bio-methanation plant to immediately cease the discharge of wastewater into the open fields. Kothwale also mentioned plans to address the overflowing sewage by engaging night soil tankers to alleviate the situation.
