MARGAO: Waste Management Minister Atanasio Babush Monserrate said that he will hold a meeting at the Saligao Waste Treatment Plant with the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco to resolve the long pending issue of the Sonsoddo garbage dump.
Incidentally the High Court has pulled up the contractor handling the Sonsodo garbage issue for slow pace of bioremediation waste and asked him to file an affidavit by April 22, where it should give a proper timeline of work execution and expected date for completion, which the court said is long overdue.
Presently, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is handling bioremediation of the legacy dump waste at Sonsodo. The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has also got the approval from the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) to remove the 15,000 tonnes of waste from inside the treatment plant at Sonsodo and send it to the legacy dump site for further bioremediation by GWMC.
Speaking to media persons, Monserrate assured to find an early solution by taking the views of all the stakeholders into consideration including MMC.
It is also to be noted that there is a High Powered Coordination Committee on Sonsodo headed by the Chief Minister.
Monserrate also felt that once the new treatment plants come up at Curtorim, Verna and Bainguinim villages, the issues of garbage management, not just of Margao but across the State, will get resolved via this decentralised approach.
