Water accumulates at Ponsulem

CANACONA: With Canacona receiving 131mm rain during a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, water logging was witnessed at some places in the taluka. Noteworthy was the knee deep accumulation of muddy water at Ponsulem, Rajbagh and Patnem road junction which was cleared by Canacona Municipality labourers by Saturday afternoon. The rainfall in the taluka was the highest amongst the 13 rain gauge stations in Goa.
Guru Komarpant, councillor of Canacona municipality, said, “The heaps of soil dumped by the contractor blocked the water flow causing water level to rise in the area. Water entered into the engines of two-wheelers causing starting problems.”
“Neither the National Highway authorities nor the contractor took the locals or the elected representatives into confidence while constructing this bypass road from Char Rasta to Mashem. The haphazard and untidy work will create more problems for the locals,” Komarpant added.
Kishore Shet, deputy chairperson and Komarpant took initiative to clear the mud which was put by the new NH66 bypass link road contractor to facilitate the road works after which the water receded from the junction to the relief of the residents around.
