Water level of Chapoli Dam dips to lowest in years

Currently at 42 per cent of its total water capacity; however, pump operator says enough water for two months

AGONDA: The fear of water scarcity looms large over Canacona Taluka, as in the rest of the State with the month of June seeing no major showers.

In Canacona, the water level of Chapoli Dam has reached its lowest in years and currently is at only 42 per cent water of its total water capacity.

The total capacity of the dam is 38.75 MLD and it was flowing at its optimum capability during July 2022. This year due to inordinate delay of the monsoon, most of the small rivers and nullahs have dried up.

The water from the dam is treated at Shristhal and then distributed throughout the taluka. The water is also supplied to orchards and farms through a small canal.

The pump attendant Sunil Velip was optimistic and said, “Before the showers, the water in the dam stood at 30.94 per cent and if the monsoon gets delayed by even two months, there is nothing to worry about. The water level is dropping by two cm every day,” he said.
