Water pumped out at Sanquelim

Authorities were forced to pump out water to prevent rainwater from flooding parts of Sanquelim on Wednesday.

MAYEM: Authorities were forced to pump out water to prevent rainwater from flooding parts of Sanquelim on Wednesday.

The water level at the Valwanti River in Sanquelim reached 4.1 metres and officials operated all four pumps at 8.30 pm on Tuesday to prevent water from entering the market area at Sanquelim.

“We started two pumps at about 8.30 pm on Tuesday, but as the water level continued to rise, there was no option to start the remaining two pumps,” said WRD Junior Engineer K P Naik.

At Bicholim, the water level from Bicholim river reached 4.25 metres, causing concern that the area near Shantadurga High School circle could get flooded.

However, de-siltation undertaken by WRD Bicholim prior to the monsoon helped regulate the smooth flow of rainwater and water levels started receding on Wednesday afternoon after the rains stopped.

A survey was conducted by a disaster management team on Wednesday to take stock of possibilities of flooding in the area.
