Water, sewage, road safety is what the voters of Taleigao are looking for

As the poll campaign trail hots up, constituents of Taleigao want incomplete projects completed

PANJIM: Taleigao for long has not been village that supplied local vegetables to the State capital. A section of the fields of Taleigao have sprouted concrete structures increasing the population of the upwardly mobile, though there are the long time residents for whom agriculture is still an occupation and a means of livelihood. As the constituency balances these two, the issues also span both.

Taleigao constituency has a little over 29,000 voters, most of who are geared up to elect their candidate as the contestants from different political parties and an independent candidate are already canvassing.

Much of the residents and voters of Taleigao, vouch for the development work that has been carried out in their constituency saying it is “there are hardly any complaints”. However, there are major issues which still concern the people of this constituency and these include lack of water supply and erratic power outages, which are also common across the State.

Another issue which emerged as one of the major problem areas is the sewage disposal along with over speeding vehicles at the Taleigao-Caranzalem road crossing.

Residents, especially those staying in independent bungalows and housing societies, were of the view that they are dependent on water tankers for the supply of water. “Each tanker costs Rs 700 and the society water bill touches nearly Rs one lakh per month. This is a major expenditure. At least 7-10 tankers are required every day. There are over 50 societies in Taleigao,” said a resident of one of the housing societies. He added, “Before giving permission to build a new housing complex, water supply needs to be fixed.”

With the ever-growing population, sewage disposal also needs attention here. The residents of Taleigao said that although the new sewage lines have been laid in some areas, it needs to be completed in all areas of the constituency. Similarly, underground laying of electricity cables and the work is in progress.

Taleigao will soon have a new panchayat office building adjacent to the present Taliegao Community Centre. At present, the Taleigao Panchayat office operates from the section of the Community Centre. As far as setting up of vigilance cameras are concerned, the Smart City Project has already undertaken steps but completion of the project is pending.

Supply of electricity is another issue at Taleigao. Efforts are being made to lay underground electricity cables. But this project will take time.

It can be completed only after the Assembly elections are over and the new government is sworn-in.
