MARGAO: Severe hardships caused to residents of South Goa by repeated shutdowns of water supply due to repair work of Selaulim water treatment plant (WTP) could soon be history as the Public Works Department (PWD) has successfully completed the repairs of two gates of the plant.
In recent past the people of South Goa were facing water shortage due to repeated closure of the plant for repairs. This major repair work of two gates of the WTP was carried out after a gap of nearly 30 years and it was urgently needed to avoid any untoward incident.

The PWD authorities have now assured that there won’t be any shut-down of water supply from the Selaulim water treatment plant due to repair works.
Speaking to Herald, Executive Engineer of PWD, Division XII Shrikant B. Gaunkar said major repair work of two gates of the treatment plant has been completed and there won’t be any shut-down of water supply for repair works.
“Last time PWD carried out major repair works of the two gates was in 1990. Now, the repair works have been undertaken after a gap of nearly 30 years as it was urgently needed,” he informed.
He also admitted that citizens were forced to face hardships due to the shut-down of water supply from the Selaulim water treatment plant, but the department tried hard to complete the works before schedule.
The Selaulim dam located at Sanguem taluka on a tributary of Zuari River is an integral component of the Selaulim irrigation project which provides water for irrigation and drinking water supply.
People living in Saclete, Sanguem, Quepem, and Marmugao talukas and other parts of South Goa district are fully dependent on this water treatment plant for their drinking water requirement.
“75 percent of the South district is getting uninterrupted water supply from the treatment plant. However, nearly 25 percent of the population is facing difficulty in getting water 24×7. There are issues related to leakage of water pipelines, besides many are using the drinking water for other purposes, which leads to scarcity of water,” Gaunkar said.
According to him the leakage of water needs to be identified and rectified, wherein the concerned department is working out the solution.
